How we work

Clients often comment that their initial consultation with us was very different than those they had with other lawyers. Although we do fact-find, we also try to understand the deeper concerns of our clients – not just how long they were married and their current financial situation or to whom they wish to leave their estate or how badly they want that acting job, but also how the person in front of us feels about the issue facing him or her.

Once we begin the actual work of a case, we believe clients’ needs are best served by a competent, compassionate and organized legal team. Each team member remains informed on the status of the case so they can address client’s concerns on a timely basis, or find necessary information as needed. Our clients have a liaison to assist them throughout their case. Legal assistants and paralegals work closely with clients to gather and organize needed documentation; law clerks or associate attorneys flesh out legal issues for research, and associate and senior lawyers lead the case strategy and prepare for litigation. Having a complete legal team allows for more brainstorming, creativity and problem-solving tailored to the client’s goals and best interests.

LITIGATION
LITIGATION

When litigation can’t be avoided

You need lawyers who know being effective in court is not about being the most aggressive. At Macias-Mayo & Thomas, we believe quiet competence backed by pertinent skillset yields success. We know that a capacity to understand both sides of a dispute, knowledge of relevant case law, excellent communication skills, meticulous preparation, and attention to detail lead to the most compelling court presentations – and the best outcomes for our clients.

CONSULTATION
CONSULTATION

Does your lawyer really listen to you?

One fundamental shortcoming of many lawyers is a lack of good listening skills. During consultation, some lawyers tend to listen just long enough to place the client into a neat legal box, often in the lawyer’s comfort zone rather than the client’s. We work hard to listen well so we can accurately capture what is important to our client and why. Empathy and understanding are keys to good listening: we find they are critical to making sure we are responding to a client’s individual needs.

PARTNERSHIP
PARTNERSHIP

Complex cases are different

They often require extensive documentation and the participation of many professionals. Knowing how to handle the communications among CPAs, financial advisors, child psychologists and the law firm is a learned skill, both attitudinally and executionally. If your case depends on the cooperation of a team of professionals, the lawyers of Macias-Mayo & Thomas have an unmatched record of working across state lines and professional domains. We bring years of experience in bridge-building, collaborative problem solving, and integrated communication to bear for our clients.

NEGOTIATION
NEGOTIATION

Will you be able to co-exist or co-parent after?

The majority of the negotiations we handle involve parties destined to have future relations, especially if there are children involved. That makes a quest for fairness and the perception of fairness key elements to any settlement. “Winning big” in a negotiation can backfire – setting up resentment and an unwillingness to abide to the tenets of the agreement much more likely.
